摘要註

This study compared three widely used educational models of instruction for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) individuals and measured participants'; writing skills, as a means to assess the quality of their language acquisition. The writing proficiency or writing level of D/HH adults was compared across American Sign Language (ASL), Oralism, and Total Communication, using the Writing Samples sub-test of the Woodcock-Johnson IV Achievement (WJ IV-Ach) Test.It was hypothesized that in a three-way comparison between ASL, Oralism and Total Communication, there would be significant writing skills (Relative Proficiency Index, RPI) differences. It was also hypothesized that when comparing the ASL group to the reference group (i.e., Total Communication), the ASL group would have lower Relative Proficiency Index (RPI) scores. The last hypothesis indicated that when comparing the Oralism group to the reference group (i.e., Total Communication), the Oralism group would have lower Relative Proficiency Index (RPI) scores. After obtaining IRB approval, 55 D/HH adults were recruited to participate in the study; all of them were high school graduates. Of the 55 recruited participants, five declined to participate, leaving a final sample of 50 D/HH adults, of which 36% were male (n = 18) and 64% female (n = 32). In terms of income, all D/HH individuals had disability status and received social security checks; most of them lived with their parents and worked part time, for a maximum of 20 hours a week. Their race and ethnicity follow: African American 58%, Hispanic Whites 38%, and others 4%. Interestingly, 96% of participants were born into hearing parents, while only 4% were born into hard of hearing or deaf parents. In terms of type of deafness, 14 participants or 28% were hard of hearing, and 36 or 72% were profoundly deaf. Thirty-two participants or 64% lived in Miami Dade, whereas 18 or 36% resided in Broward County. In organizing the data for analysis, the investigator cluste
