"A kid from Saigon" is a coming of age story. It is customary for a Chinese family to give bride price to the bride's family in order for their son to marry. A son was humiliated by his classmates at school that his mother was "bought." His father had to explain to him the culture about giving money/property to the family that raised the bride upon marriage.
